Making a name for itself since 1955, Switzerland’s youngest luxury watch brand, Corum, is known for unusual— and sometimes outlandish —case and dial designs. In 1999, the company was purchased by Severin Wunderman, who had enjoyed twenty-three years of creating highly successful wristwatches for fashion giant Gucci. After a number of overly daring forays into the shimmering world of fashion watches, he led Corum back to the straight and narrow before dying of a stroke, on June 25, 2008, at the age of 69.
Together with Wunderman’s son, Michael, CEO Antonio Calce turned the focus of the collection toward the brand’s two “draft horses.” The legendary Golden Bridge baguette movement received a complete makeover, featuring a totally new technical interpretation in modern materials and such complicated mechanisms as a flying tourbillon. The development of these extraordinary movements requires great watchmaking craftsmanship. In fact, the company has added a number of professional watchmakers to its workforce, who make good use of the new technical equipment in Corum’s workshops. The product development department also underwent expansion and modernization in preparation for the development of even more innovations.
