The fact that, in a period of fifteen years, a company once famous only for its exclusive writing implements managed to transform itself into a distinguished watch brand is one of the most impressive stories in the watch industry.

It was with great skill and cleverness that Nicolas Rieussec used the invention of the first chronograph— the “Time Writer,” a device that released droplets of ink onto a rotating sheet of paper— to make a name for himself. And now, it seems, the tradition of using ink and time to create success continues: As the Richemont Group’s first brand, Montblanc enjoys the exclusive use of an automatic chronograph, developed under a shroud of secrecy at the Manufacture Horlogère ValFleurier.
